During my gap year from college I took up a position at Octonic. They are pioneering in VR fitness by bringing the virtual world to the treadmill in the safest and most immersive ways possible. The app is able to link to hundreds of different treadmills models that enables the users to safely sync their physical speed to their virtual speed. From its pre launch to onboarding thousands of users, I have created brand new levels and worlds from scratch. I was able to identify issues early on and create efficient workflows to meet short deadlines.

The first environment I created for Octonic. A minimalist environment with a Tron-esque style. Despite its simple design, it turned out to be a favorite among many runners.

Environment Iterations

When I first started off on the neon space theme I went a bit overboard with the design. I never expected the look of the final design, even though I expected to do simplifications from the first design. I personally would've loved an in between, but the team decided on a very minimalistic style. Moreover, through this project I learned about a very VR exclusive issue in environment design: Incredibly obvious aliasing and visual flickering when there are stark contrasts in color change. It took some experimentation to learn exactly how to eliminate these visual artifacts, and this new knowledge carried over to later projects. It enabled me to know exactly how to control the designs to eliminate obvious aliasing.

SPRINTBLASTER

The runner launches rockets at enemy targets as they run across the apocalyptic landscape. This is the first gamified level with Octonic. Even though the mechanics are simple, it required meticulous testing to ensure safe gameplay while on the treadmill.

Gameplay

As the player runs through the path, they will point their head towards enemies to destroy them through missile lock on. The enemy objects are procedurally generated and gets progressively harder. Intensive testing was essential for this project. Because the player is running on the treadmill, multiple safety precautions needed to be put into consideration. For example, the lock on system needs to be sensitive enough to not cause target fixation which is dangerous for balance. Furthermore, enemy objects need to become indestructible by the time they exceed a certain degree of head turn from the player pov. 

Environment

The environment is apocalyptic with a futuristic industrial aesthetic.

SPACE MINER

A resource mining game set in space. Set as a stepping stone for future projects that implement hands as a way to interact with the world.

This was a simple project but built on a tight deadline. I was busy with school and had around a month to build a world from ideation to finish. A space mining idea came to me after playing Deep Rock Galactic. The original idea was to have a hook that will
